SUMMARY:Buddy Ebsen Exhibition on Display at Univ. of Wyoming American Heritage Center
DESCRIPTION:“The Entertaining Life of Buddy Ebsen” is the new exhibition hosted by the University of Wyoming’s American Heritage Center (AHC) \n“The exhibit begins with Ebsen’s days as a song and dance man in vaudeville and in the ‘Ziegfeld Follies\,’” says AHC Assistant Archivist Roger Simon\, who curated the exhibition. “It then moves to his early Hollywood career in the late 1930s\, when he acted alongside stars such as Jack Benny\, Barbara Stanwyck and Judy Garland.” \nEbsen’s big break should have come when he played the Tin Man in “The Wizard of Oz” in 1939\, but the aluminum dust in his makeup caused major health problems; he was hospitalized and forced to leave the production. Ebsen later observed\, “I had ingested pure aluminum; it had coated my lungs like paint.” \nThe Ebsen exhibition features materials from all stages of his career\, even exploring his playwriting and painting. It will be on display in the AHC’s loggia through Jan. 15. Through his wife Dorothy Ebsen’s gift\, Buddy Ebsen’s papers and effects make the AHC exhibition possible\, Flesher says. \nThe American Heritage Center in Laramie is open 10-5 Monday-Friday. \n  \nFor more information\, visit UW’s AHC at www.uwyo.edu/ahc/.

SUMMARY:But Tell Me\, Is It a Civilized Country? A exhibition featuring the artwork of Max Guy
DESCRIPTION:Multimedia artist Max Guy’s first solo exhibition\, But Tell Me\, Is It a Civilized Country?\, runs December 3 through February 5 at the Renaissance Society in Chicago’s Hyde Park. The show explores various iterations and adaptations of L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz. (The title references the Munchkins’ query about Dorothy’s native Kansas.) \n“I often take literature or movies as a jumping-off point\,” Guy says during a walk-through of the Arts Club preview in October. “I think I was really interested in\, frankly\, why Motown would produce a Black-excellence version of The Wizard of Oz\, which led me to exploring the entire kind of canon of literature.” That canon consists of 14 novels by Baum and several more by other writers authorized by Baum’s publisher after his death in 1919\, as well as countless adaptations in other forms\, including the aforementioned movies\, which Guy is editing together into a two-channel video installation. \nA New York City native\, Guy\, 33\, arrived here in 2014 to pursue an MFA at Northwestern. “I like to say that it was just my excuse to move to Chicago. For a long time\, all of the emerging artists whose work I liked\, they were coming out of Chicago.” His art spans such disciplines as video\, sculpture\, and collage\, and it has been exhibited at Expo Chicago\, the Museum of Contemporary Art\, and the Malmö Art Museum in Sweden. \n\nOpening Celebration Saturday Dec. 3 from 4-7 pm\nExhibition walk-through with artist Max Guy and Curator Michael Harrison Dec. 17\, 3-4:30 pm. \nHours: Wed – Thu 12pm to 6pm\, Fri 1pm to 7pm\, Sat – Sun 12pm to 6pm \n\nExcerpt from “Emerald Visions\,” Chicago Magazine   (Click to read full article)\n\n\nBY KRIS VIRE\nPHOTOGRAPH BY LENNY GILMORE\n\nDECEMBER 1\, 2022\, 10:00 AM
