SUMMARY:The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus in
DESCRIPTION:The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus — Concordia\, Kansas\n\n\n\nHave you ever wondered just where Santa Claus came from? The Brown Grand Players share the story of Saint Nicholas as told to L. Frank Baum by Necile\, the nymph who found Claus and raised him as her own in the world of Knooks\, Faeries\, Ryls and\, yes\, even the dreaded Awgwas. “Beware the Awgwas\,” Necile warns Claus. “they hide under beds to frighten human children!” And so Claus decides he must leave the world of the Immortals and live among the humans\, making toys to make children happy. He gets help from Jack Frost\, who shows him the Frost Gale\, allowing Claus and his sleigh to fly\, and from two runaway Knooks\, Lem and Barlo\, who want to hear the children laugh. This delightful tale answers once and for all how Santa Claus made the first toy\, why he climbs down chimneys and\, most of all\, how he learned to laugh that great “Ho\, ho\, ho.” \nTickets available at the door only: $10/Adults; $5/Children & Students \n\n\n\n\n\nPresented:\nNovember 22\, 2024 at 7:00PM\nNovember 23\, 2024 at 7:00PM\nNovember 24\, 2024 at 2:00PM \n

SUMMARY:The Wizard of Oz in Illinois and Beyond: Decatur Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Decatur historian Mark W. Sorensen will give an illustrated presentation about how L. Frank Baum came to Chicago in 1891 and 125 years ago wrote the children’s Book-of-the-Year\, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Thinking it a one-time effort\, demands from children across the country convinced him and later “Royal Historians of Oz” to keep writing until there eventually were officially 40 Oz-related books. Sorensen will explain how the first Oz book was quickly turned into a Broadway musical\, then a multi-media theatrical tour\, then at least four silent films before the fan-favorite 1939 MGM technicolor Wizard of Oz film starring Judy Garland. Baum’s basic story keeps getting reinterpreted as exemplified by more recent productions of The Wiz and Wicked. \nMark Sorensen was named an “Illinois Library Luminary” and has received the Illinois State Historical Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award. His article\, Illinois and “The Marvelous Land of Oz” was published in the July/August 2024 issue of Illinois Heritage magazine. He landed in Decatur 55 years ago and serves as the Official Macon County Historian.

SUMMARY:Marvelous: The Sequel to Oz\, an Illustrated Musical Opera
DESCRIPTION:The Sistersville (WV) Opera presents: Marvelous! an opera based on L. Frank Baum’s Marvelous Land of Oz. Merissa Beddows stars with a cast of students from the Carnegie-Mellon School of Music in Pittsburgh. Artwork by Vincent Myrand that will be projected in the opera will be showcased in the adjoining Gold Derrick Gallery immediately after the show. \nAccording to the event’s website Marvelous is\, “An opera that combines the approachability of musicals with the seriousness of opera. The orchestra—and singers—bookend projected center stage illustrations created for the opera by noted Oz illustrator and artist Vincent Myrand. The music\, in addition to acoustic instruments\, has a unique feature: synthesized sampled strings are used as an ever-present sonic backdrop\, which constantly evokes the magic of the Land of Oz\, and also absorbs the uppermost partials of the high instruments and voices\, smoothing out the overall timbre of the sound in a way an acoustic orchestra simply cannot.
