DESCRIPTION:Certified genealogist Pam Anderson will present “W. W. Denslow: The Wonderful Illustrator of Franklin County\,” at the 12th annual meeting of Antietam Historical Association Wednesday\, April 16. Denslow (1856–1915)\, a native of Philadelphia\, is best remembered as the illustrator of the first edition of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” \nAnderson will offer scenes from Waynesboro and Washington and Quincy townships from Denslow’s artwork in “Historical Sketch of Franklin County” (1878)\, accompanied by how they appear today. \nDuring the social hour\, Seth Holmes of Waynesboro will exhibit watercolors of local sites\, and Anderson will display items related to her presentation. Also during the social hour\, Robert S. Benchoff\, a Marion P. Grove Fellow of AHA\, will sign copies of his new book\, “A Sketch of Mount Joy School.” Pianist Sally Wolfe will perform during the social hour at 5:30 p.m. and during dinner at 6:30 p.m. \nThe cost is $45 per person due by Tuesday\, April 8. The Mattydale\, NY\, location is the site where Baum’s childhood home “Roselawn” once stood. \nThe Saturday\, May 17 ceremony celebrates the planned marker\, the 125-year anniversary of the book\, and the birthday of L. Frank Baum\, who was born May 15\, 1856. \nThe marker itself will be placed after completion of the Hoosock-Jensen Salina Community Center that is currently under construction. The new mix will be presented in select theaters\, offering an immersive Sonic experience that honors the brilliance of producer Quincy Jones\, the film’s Oscar-nominated music supervisor and producer.  \nDirected by legendary director Sidney Lumet (Dog Day Afternoon\, The Verdict) The Wiz was a daring and ambitious film that captured the spirit of Broadway show while reflecting the vibrant Black zeitgeist of the 1970s. Joel Schumacher\, who later went on to his own successful career as a film director\, adapted the screenplay from William F. DESCRIPTION:Butler Haynes Park in Mapleton\, Illinois takes center stage again this year Aug. 9th. This family-friendly annual celebration of Oz includes meet-and-greets with the cast members from the Spirit of Oz. Steven’s Puppets bring The Wizard of Oz to the puppet stage at the Oz Pavilion\, and fans of all ages are welcome in the costume contests. Cast performances and photo opportunities\, sing-alongs\, Wizard of Oz memorabilia vendors\, a Wicked Witch Cackling Contest\, and a silent auction are among the many traditions that have made this 20-year-old festival a favorite. So many games for kids!  And James and Amanda Wallace attend to sign their original Oz books. \nIf you’ve never been\, make this the year you set your sights on Mapleton and join the fun. The grounds open at 10 and the festival wraps up with fond farewells at 5:15. \nTickets are $7 for adults\, $5 for seniors (55+)\, and $3 for kids 3-12. There is no charge for kids 2 and younger.

DESCRIPTION:Author Laura DeNooyer (A Hundred Magical Reasons\, The Broken Weather Vane) will speak at the Herrick Main Library in Holland\, Michigan\, Sept.\, 8 as part of their Writing with History program. The series hosts local authors who use history as inspiration for their fiction. \nA Hundred Magical Reasons is set near Lake Macatawa. The plot follows author L. Frank Baum\, his friendship with a young girl\, and the impact of that friendship across the decades. \nLaura will talk about the joys and challenges of using history as a portal into fiction. \nA Hundred Magical Reasons has won several literary awards from programs such as the American Writing Awards\, The Bookfest\, and Literary Titan. DESCRIPTION:The Land of Oz: Beyond the Page  explores the imaginative artistry required to turn the classic children’s story into a beloved 1939 MGM movie. Divided into three sections—Writing\, Costume\, and Production Design—the installation reveals how the designers brought L. Frank Baum’s world to life. The exhibit fills two galleries on the Museum’s third floor. \nHighlights include a replica of Dorothy’s Ruby Red slippers\, an early draft of the script\, a prototype of the iconic Flying Monkey costume\, a character costume from Emerald City\, and a replica of the Cowardly Lion’s Badge of Courage. SUMMARY:Hotel del Coronado "A Holiday in Oz"
DESCRIPTION:“There’s no place like home” when it comes to making holiday plans\, and what better place to spend the festive season than at the very place that inspired the world of Oz? Hotel del Coronado has announced its annual holiday theme this year will be “A Holiday in Oz\,” a celebration of its storied connection to L. Frank Baum\, the author behind the iconic “Wizard of Oz” series. \nThe revitalized Victorian Garden Courtyard will take visitors to the land of Oz\, complete with a projection of the yellow brick road and magnificent trees adorned with Baum’s beloved characters\, including Dorothy and Toto\, the Scarecrow\, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion. \nThe grove of towering Norfolk Island Pines on the Founders Lawn will be the scene of a dynamic light show orchestrated to an Oz-inspired soundtrack\, a brilliant ethereal experience that captivates guests with a finale of snow flurries.  The complimentary 10-minute show takes place every 30 minutes from 5-9pm nightly. Open to the public (no reservations needed). \nPlus\, The Del will welcome back its annual traditions of putting up the two-story Christmas tree inside the lobby and the iconic ice skating rink for Skating by the Sea. Like previous years\, a portion of the proceeds from the ice skating rink will go toward Make-A-Wish San Diego. \nBaum was a frequent visitor at The Del between 1904 and 1917\, and reportedly used the hotel’s castle-like architecture and sweeping oceanfront views as inspiration for his creative works. The Del recently underwent a more than six-year-long\, $550 million restoration project\, making this upcoming holiday season even more special for guests. \nThe enchanting experience kicks off on Nov. 21 and lasts until Jan. 4\, 2026.

In addition to three in-person Q&As\, our retrospective culminates with a masterclass with Murch himself followed by a screening of APOCALYPSE NOW: FINAL CUT\, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Sound. \nReturn to Oz will be featured Saturday\, Jan. 25 at 7pm at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
