DESCRIPTION:Preempted from freeFall Theatre Company’s 19/20 season\, OZ a new world-premiere musical\, takes the stage June 2. The original production will reportedly “explore the genius of L. Frank Baum and his complicated relationship with his most famous creation\, the Land of Oz.”  The announcement goes on to say\, “This is the story of a dreamer at the dawn of a new age who reinvented the fairy tale in a distinctly American way\, painting an idealized and magical vision of a world where witches might be good\, and what you’re seeking is already inside you.” \nOZ stars David Foley\, Jr. (Broadway National Tour of The Phantom of the Opera)\, Melissa Minyard (Broadway’s Les Miserables) and Drew H. Wells (freeFall debut!). Tampa Bay favorite Roxanne Fay is Matilda Joslyn Gage with Elizabeth Meckler (American Stage’s Ragtime) as Dorothy.  freeFall’s artistic director Eric Davis and resident music director Michael Raabe have been collaborating for more than a decade on re-imagined productions of classics The Pirates of Penzance\, Peter Pan\, War of the Worlds and the interactive walkthrough experience\, The Rose and The Beast. DESCRIPTION:The annual Oz-Stravaganza Festival is the largest and longest-running Wizard of Oz-themed festival in the world. The magic lives on for a weekend every year in Chittenango\, NY (just outside Syracuse). \nJoin us the weekend of the first Saturday in June for a trip down the Yellow Brick Road. There will be new friends to meet\, entertainment to amaze\, Emerald City shopping at its finest with vendors from near and far\, as well as rides\, games\, a silent auction\, and entertainment on the stage. There is also a costume contest\, coloring contest\, writing contest\, and photography contest\, and special guests from across the Oz universe! \nIn addition to the festival; (complete with Friday night fireworks and a Saturday afternoon parade\, and evening shows featuring the special guests)\, Baum’s birthplace features yellow brick road sidewalks that take you to the All Things Oz Museum\, a Creek-walk along Chittenango Creek\, and the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum. Visit the shops and eateries throughout the village and take some extra time for nearby attractions like the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center (where Baum was married)\, the WILD Animal Park\, Chittenango Falls State Park\, and the YBR Casino. \nWhether your slippers are silver or ruby red\, take three steps\, or click your heels three times and remember…there’s no place like home! \n

SUMMARY:But Tell Me\, Is It a Civilized Country? A exhibition featuring the artwork of Max Guy
DESCRIPTION:Multimedia artist Max Guy’s first solo exhibition\, But Tell Me\, Is It a Civilized Country?\, runs December 3 through February 5 at the Renaissance Society in Chicago’s Hyde Park. The show explores various iterations and adaptations of L. Frank Baum’s Land of Oz. (The title references the Munchkins’ query about Dorothy’s native Kansas.) \n“I often take literature or movies as a jumping-off point\,” Guy says during a walk-through of the Arts Club preview in October. “I think I was really interested in\, frankly\, why Motown would produce a Black-excellence version of The Wizard of Oz\, which led me to exploring the entire kind of canon of literature.” That canon consists of 14 novels by Baum and several more by other writers authorized by Baum’s publisher after his death in 1919\, as well as countless adaptations in other forms\, including the aforementioned movies\, which Guy is editing together into a two-channel video installation. \nA New York City native\, Guy\, 33\, arrived here in 2014 to pursue an MFA at Northwestern. “I like to say that it was just my excuse to move to Chicago.
