Historical note: In the 1960s, the world was an open book for Oz and Baum enthusiasts. The Baum Bugle connected these early scholars—most of them collectors—and helped them piece together an understanding of L. Frank Baum’s life and work, including the creation and publication of the Oz books. As a result, much of the Bugle content from this time period is tentative and even conversational, demonstrating enthusiastic and pioneering work that would prove foundational in decades to come. Early editors Dick Martin and Fred M. Meyer, along with core early contributors such as David L. and Douglas G. Greene, kept up the momentum by featuring as many exciting and intriguing aspects of the worlds of L. Frank Baum as they could. However, it was with the introduction of a new editorial team in 1968, led first by James E. Haff and then by David L. Greene, that The Baum Bugle began to truly resemble the journal we know today.
