Ray Powell organized and directed the Munchkin Convention from its inception in 1967. His partners in that effort were his wife, Louise, and Daniel Mannix. Ray took great pleasure in being the auctioneer, and was particularly aggressive in his efforts to make sure all 40 original Oz titles passed under his gavel at Munchkin gatherings. He also served as one of the International Wizard of Oz Club’s directors, and helped publicize the Club through his lively interviews with local newspapers.
Ray assembled one of the finest Oz collections in the country and was particularly knowledgeable about his favorite illustrator, John R. Neill. He was happiest when hunting for Oz treasures at local flea markets and antique bazaars.
One of the first Baum Bugle articles to address the topic of Oz toys and games was written by Ray. He also wrote and privately printed two original Oz books, Mr. Flint in Oz and The Raggedys in Oz.
