American novelist, Rachel Cosgrove (Payes) (1922-1998) is a genre novelist known for historical romance novels, science-fiction, fantasy, and gothic novels. Her first published book was The Hidden Valley of Oz. She wrote a sequel shortly after, The Wicked Witch of Oz, which the shortsighted editor at Reilly & Lee rejected, but was later published by the International Wizard of Oz Club in 1993 and illustrated by Eric Shanower. She revisited several characters from The Hidden Valley of Oz in short stories, published in Oz-Story Magazine.
