Autumn 1969 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Wizard of Oz – Film Classic –
John Fricke pens one of the first major narratives on the creation of MGM’s The Wizard of Oz (1939), including pre-production challenges, production methods, and publicity, to celebrate its 30th anniversary. This pioneering effort would be the groundwork for many subsequent articles and book-length publications by Fricke and others.
A Checklist of the Major Material on the MGM Wizard of Oz Film
John Fricke compiles a comprehensive review of magazine and newspaper articles, reviews, advertising, and publicity, plus studio publicity, contemporaneous with the original release of the film in 1939. In addition, he has included a short section on books that examine the film retrospectively (although these were largely outmoded over subsequent decades). This checklist was updated and expanded in the Autumn 1979 issue.
Aunt Hulda’s Good Time
An original short story by L. Frank Baum, reprinted from The Youth’s Companion in 1899.
Bibliographia Baumiana
Dick Martin collates bibliographical data about the early printings of Baum’s non-Oz books. This installment focuses on Queen Zixi of Ix. A revised and expanded examination would later be published in the Autumn 2001 issue.
Jimmy Bulber of Oz
Fred M. Meyer provides details of Frank Joslyn Baum’s unpublished Oz book, which was registered for copyright in 1934.
In Memoriam
Judy Garland (actor, MGM’s The Wizard of Oz).
