This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Road to Reilly and Lee
Dick Martin remembers his initial interactions with Reilly & Lee that led to his work on The Visitors from Oz, the four large-format Oz storybooks, and Merry Go Round in Oz. Includes samples of his work from contemporaneous non-Oz projects.
Dear Mrs. McGraw / Dear Mr. Martin
Reprinted correspondence between author Eloise Jarvis McGraw and illustrator Dick Martin (with occasional contributions from co-author Lauren Lynn McGraw) describe the creation of Merry Go Round in Oz in 1963 and The Forbidden Fountain of Oz in 1979. Illustrated with unpublished Martin drawings of characters from the books.
The Ozmapolitan
This is a special facsimile of the original Ozmapolitan “newspaper” from 1963, which Reilly & Britton used to promote Merry Go Round in Oz. Earlier facsimiles from 1904, 1926, and 1927 were published in the Spring 1963, Autumn 1966, and Winter 1977 issues. The 1928 edition would follow in the Spring 1988 issue and the 1970 edition in the Autumn 1995 issue.
Bears of Assorted Flavors: A Conversation with the Royal Historian
David Maxine pens a biographical profile of Eloise Jarvis McGraw, which includes substantial quotes from McGraw on aspects of her career and writing philosophy.
The Assistant Inventor and Head Trouble-Shooter
A biographical sketch of author Lauren Lynn McGraw by David Maxine.
The Canonization of Merry Go Round in Oz
Phyllis Ann Karr considers whether or not Merry Go Round in Oz is a canonical Oz book, using criteria largely aligned with Baum’s original fourteen novels.
Eloise Jarvis McGraw: A Checklist of Her Published Work
Dick Martin: A Checklist of His Published Work
Two checklists with essential data for the works of the Newbery Award-winning author and her two-time illustrator. McGraw’s checklist includes books, articles, honors, and biographical articles, while Martin’s checklist includes books written, books illustrated, cut-out books, book jackets, and “odds and ends.” Martin’s also includes illustrative examples of greeting cards, playing card decks, and some unpublished drawings.
