Autumn 1997 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Wizard on the Road
Ruth Berman examines the tours of the Wizard of Oz musical extravaganza, following its 1902 opening in Chicago and continuing for more then a decade. Cast, song, and skit changes are all documented.
The Making of Oz: The American Fairyland
Co-producer Leonard A. Swann, Jr. recalls the development and production of a new video documentary about L. Frank Baum and Oz.
Santore’s Dorothy
William Stillman pens a brief photo-essay recalling artist Charles Santore’s search for the perfect Dorothy model. Includes quotes from, and many photos of, Elizabeth Leonard, the girl who was ultimately selected.
Oz Oddity
The editors look back at W. L. Stensgaard Co., the “most prominent” licensee of MGM’s The Wizard of Oz in 1939. Their colorful seal is reproduced on the inside back cover, and a color centerfold shows off one of their store displays.
In Memoriam
Daniel Mannix (author, founder of the Munchkin convention, Baum Bugle contributor).
