Autumn 2000 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Dr. Baum: The Royal Historian’s Brother
Sue Ferrera looks at the life and career of Henry Clay Baum, L. Frank Baum’s brother, with whom the author shared a close relationship. This is a thorough piece that includes quotes from Mrs. Cynthia Tassini, Henry’s daughter, and many family photographs.
Oz Editorial Cartoons Revisited
Carl Rexroad pens an addendum to his Spring 1997 article, “Through History with The Wizard of Oz” (dubbed here “very popular with Oz Club members”), examining editorial cartoons using Oz imagery and metaphor, much of it relating to political candidates. This second installment covers cartoons from 1997–1999, and several example cartoons are included.
The Remarkable Return to Oz
Peter E. Hanff examines L. Frank Baum’s publishing adventures from 1900 to 1904, covering several publishing houses and multiple Baum books, leading up to The Marvelous Land of Oz and a long association with Reilly & Britton. Much of the article is supported by content from the Baum scrapbooks held by the Oz Club, and some examples of scrapbook pages are included. A color centerfold of six advertising cards for “Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz” is taken from one of the scrapbooks, as well.
