Autumn 2001 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Author, Correspondent, Friend: Tributes to Eloise Jarvis McGraw
Oz Club members David Moyer, John Fricke, and David Maxine, along with others outside the Club, remember the sixth Royal Historian of Oz, Eloise Jarvis McGraw. She was an enthusiastic fan of the Oz books and a prolific children’s author herself, the winner of three Newbery Honor Awards. Her obituary, written by her daughter and co-author Lauren Lynn McGraw, opens the issue, along with a brief checklist of her published works.
Oz Centennial Marked by Major Library Exhibits
Michael Gessel details two exhibits held to honor the 100th anniversary of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: one at the Library of Congress, the other at the Los Angeles Public Library.
Early Morning Musings: Writing The Hidden Prince of Oz
Gina Wickwar reflects on writing the contest-winning Oz book for the centennial, The Hidden Prince of Oz, including her background, the contest itself, the themes she hoped to introduce into the book, the use of wordplay and names, respecting Baum’s characters, and more.
Of Talking Bridges and Feather Boas: The Art of The Hidden Prince of Oz
Cool Oz: A Review of The Hidden Prince of Oz’s Art
Illustrator Anna Maria-Cool takes readers behind the scenes of her illustrations for The Hidden Prince of Oz, as well as the design of the book. Includes many examples of her character sketches. This is followed by Eric Shanower‘s “review” of the art.
Bibliographia Baumiana: Queen Zixi of Ix
The Original Serial Publication of Queen Zixi of Ix
Bibliographia Baumiana provides bibliographical details of non-Oz works by Baum, occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. This installment, by Patrick M. Maund and Peter E. Hanff, examines Queen Zixi of Ix—including the rare British edition. An earlier assessment of this title appeared in the Autumn 1969 issue. Here, it is followed immediately by a bibliographic examination of Queen Zixi‘s serialization in St. Nicholas.
In Memoriam
George Gibson (art director, MGM’s The Wizard of Oz), Eloise Jarvis McGraw (sixth Royal Historian of Oz).
