Autumn 2002 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Frank and Maud Baum’s Grand Tour Abroad

David Moyer follows L. Frank Baum and Maud Gage Baum on their European tour in 1906, covering many locations through Sicily, Italy, Switzerland, and Paris. He extensively quotes Maud’s letters to construct the narrative, responding with factual data that would have been unavailable to them at the time. Some suggestions are also made concerning how various sites and locations may have inspired Frank’s writing. Illustrated with many of the Baums’ photographs. This article immediately followed a companion piece in Spring 2002, detailing the Egyptian leg of the trip.

The MGM Scrapbook: Judy Garland—Daughter of the Rainbow

Bill Beem reproduces two items relating to horoscopes: first, L. Frank Baum’s astrological chart from American Astrology in 1939, and then, a feature-length piece on Judy Garland’s astrological profile from 1959.

The Wonderful Voices of Oz

Tim Hollis tells the story of the Disneyland Records productions of “The Scarecrow of Oz,” “The Cowardly Lion of Oz,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “The Tin Woodman of Oz,” focusing mostly on the voice actors who frequently played multiple roles, including Robie Lester, Martha Wentworth, Dallas McKinnon, Ginny Tyler, and Sam Edwards.

Oz in Russia Since Volkov (Part 1)

Stephen J. Teller examines Magic Land books from Russia that have been published since March Laumer completed his long-running feature in Spring 1988. After brief reprises of the first five Volkov books, Teller summarizes Volkov’s final book, The Secret of the Deserted Castle (1982), which was never covered by Laumer. Then, he moves on to detailed descriptions of Yuri Kusnetzov’s The Emerald Rain (1992) and Leonid Vladimirsky’s Buratino in the Emerald City (1996). The article includes many examples of the illustrations from the books. A second part to this article would be published in Autumn 2003.

Bibliographia Baumiana: The Songs of Father Goose

Bibliographia Baumiana provides bibliographical details of non-Oz works by Baum, occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. This installment, by Patrick M. Maund and Peter E. Hanff, examines The Songs of Father Goose. An earlier assessment of this title appeared in the Autumn 1966 issue.
