Spring 1971 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

The Autobiography of Robert Stanton Baum (Part 2)

The second half of an edited memoir by Robert Stanton Baum, L. Frank Baum’s second son. Although the narrative is about Robert, the edit presented in the Bugle focuses on highlights in which his famous father (unsurprisingly) features heavily. This second installment covers Robert’s life from 1899 (age 13) until 1906 (age 20), after which the story abruptly stops. Part 1 was published in the Christmas 1970 issue.

Bibliographia Pseudonymiana

The editors collate bibliographical data about the early printings of Baum’s works published under a pseudonym. This installment focuses on “John Estes Cooke’s” Tamawaca Folks.

The Tramp and the Baby

An original short story by L. Frank Baum, reprinted from The Ladies’ World in October 1911.

Oz and Middle Earth

Barbara S. Koelle compares the two famous fantasy worlds, examining—among other aspects—fantasy hierarchies, the importance of ordinary protagonists, the fight between good and evil, and the way in which both Baum and Tolkien were somewhat overwhelmed by their creations. One very small element—how some of Tolkien’s beings might be compared to the Nomes of Ev—would later be developed in an entirely new direction in the Autumn 2021 issue.

In Memoriam

Charlie Ruggles (actor, The Tik-Tok Man of Oz).
