Spring 1979 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Oz in Japan
After more than 15 years of occasional and assorted international roundups, Douglas G. Greene takes the Bugle‘s first concentrated look at editions of the Oz books originating from Japan. This issue’s front and back cover features art from three such editions. Updated to this article would be presented in the Spring 1984 and Spring 1995 issues.
Helpful Hints for Beginning Collectors
Robin Olderman pens a conversational set of notes by which collectors might start to identify desirable editions of Oz books. Many of these guidelines were clarified with additional research over succeeding decades.
Oz Under Scrutiny: Early Reviews of The Marvelous Land of Oz
The editors look at reviews of The Marvelous Land of Oz contemporary with its original publication. Includes vintage advertising.
The Tiger’s Eye
An unpublished original short story by L. Frank Baum, written ca. 1905. Includes a new illustration by Dick Martin.
The Ballad of Pirates’ Gold
A beautifully detailed full-page illustration by John R. Neill, reprinted from the June 1921 issue of Boys’ Life, where it illustrated the poem of this name. Many details are worth comparing to Neill’s “Treasure Island” painting seen on the back cover of the Spring 1978 Bugle.
Oz in America, or A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Emerald City
Barbara S. Koelle considers the ways in which Oz has seeded itself into American culture, noting how this has influenced—and may yet be influenced by—The Wiz.
“The Wiz” Reviews from Around the U.S.
Eight reviews of the new film adaptation of The Wiz are quoted, following the Bugle‘s own review.
