Spring 1986 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Matilda Jewell Gage 1886–1986 (Part 1)

Sally Roesch Wagner pens a comprehensive biography of L. Frank Baum’s niece, which had been intended to celebrate her 100th birthday and was sadly repurposed as a memorial tribute. This first installment focuses on Matilda’s life up through high school. The article would be concluded in the Autumn 1986 issue. Includes many rare photographs.

The Dust Jackets of Oz

Marc Lewis carefully describes the first edition dust jackets for Baum’s fourteen Oz novels, as well as The Little Wizard Stories of Oz. A second installment of this feature would be published in the Spring 1987 issue, as well as a third in Winter 1989.

L. Frank Baum: Amateur Printer

Michael Patrick Hearn looks at Baum’s juvenile occupation as the printer of a “home newspaper,” the Rose Lawn Home Journal. L. Frank Baum’s first “book,” Baum’s Complete Stamp Dealers Directory, is also briefly discussed. The article is accompanied by full-page photographs of one fully extant, four-page copy of the Home Journal, from July 1, 1871.

Bibliographia Baumiana: Baum’s Complete Stamp Dealers Directory

A new series of Bibliographia Baumiana starts here, looking at non-Oz works by Baum and occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. This installment, by Michael Patrick Hearn, examines the youthful Baum’s stamp collecting pamphlet.
