Spring 1989 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Eric Shanower: A New and Different Royal Historian

David Maxine writes a biographical profile, with interview quotes, of Eric Shanower, at this time primarily known for his original graphic novels set in the world of Oz. Includes sketches from his fourth graphic novel, The Forgotten Forest of Oz, and followed by a selected checklist of his published work up to that point.

To the Littlefield Baby

An original poem by L. Frank Baum.

The Other Oz: Oz Apocrypha Beyond the Forty Books

Stephen J. Teller considers extra-canonical Oz works, dividing them into the categories of deutreo-canonical, orthodox apocrypha, and heretical apocrypha. He then examines examples of these, primarily focusing on heretical apocrypha (new Oz stories not contradicting the established canon).

After The Wizard: The Influence of America’s Best Loved Fairy Tales on Other Fantasies for Children

Barbara Koelle looks at several major fantasies from the turn of the century that could be said to have been inspired by (or, perhaps, attempted to replicate) the success of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, including Zauberlinda, the Wise Witch by Eva Katharine Gibson; The Rumbilicus Book by Walt McDougall; The Pearl and the Pumpkin by Paul West, with art by W. W. Denslow; The King of Gee Whiz by Emerson Hough; and many more.

Stage Wizard Kicks Off National Tour at Radio City Music Hall

Barbara Arnstein reports on a new production of The Wizard of Oz as it begins a nationwide tour. A sidebar describes a publicity event in which top New York City students were honored for “excellence in brains, courage, and heart.”

In Memoriam

Robert A. Baum (grandson of L. Frank Baum).
