Spring 1990 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Remembrances of an Oz Friend

Memories of Dick Martin, who died as the previous issue went to press, from many prominent members of the Oz Club.

The Mystery of Dr. Nikidik and Dr. Pipt

Mary Rakestraw attempts to reconcile one of L. Frank Baum’s most famous inconsistencies: the two men identified as “Crooked Magicians,” each of whom seems to have created the Powder of Life.

The Enchanted Island of Yew: Baum’s Adult Children’s Book

Martin Gardner looks at various aspects of Baum’s 1903 fantasy, including the location of Yew, the way in which several characters’ natures bely their appearances, the inverted quality of the plot, and both nonsensical and philosophical elements. Intended as an essay for Dover Publications’ reprint of the book, which was never published.

Just For Fun: Flirting Song

Sheet music for a song from The Tik-Tok Man of Oz, with lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Louis F. Gottschalk. This is presented as a pull-out center section of the issue.

Bibliographia Baumiana: American Fairy Tales (1901)

Bibliographia Baumiana provides bibliographical details of non-Oz works by Baum, occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. This installment, by Patrick Maund, examines American Fairy Tales. An earlier assessment of this title appeared in the Autumn 1967 issue.

In Memoriam

Dick Martin (Royal Historian of Oz and editor of The Baum Bugle, 1961–67).
