Michael Gessel examines the phenomenon of “The Wizard of Oz: A Parable on Populism,” Henry M. Littlefield’s famous 1964 article proposing that Baum’s story is based around a political allegory for the Populist movement of the 1890s. Despite being entirely Littlefield’s invention, the theory is now widely presented as fact by poorly researched texts.
