Spring 1999 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Royal Historian of Oz V: A Reminiscence

Eric Shanower memorializes Rachel Cosgrove Payes, fifth Royal Historian of Oz (whose passing was noted briefly in the previous issue), recalling how he met her and their work together on The Wicked Witch of Oz and Oz-Story 3.

A Hidden Valley No Longer in Hiding

Eric Shanower describes his pitch to re-issue The Hidden Valley of Oz with new illustrations alongside The Wicked Witch of Oz (a proposal that was turned down in lieu of a facsimile of the original). Illustrated with examples from his proposal.

The MGM Scrapbook: “Uncle” Charley

Jay Scarfone provides a brief sketch of the actor who played Uncle Henry in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz, with rare photographs.

Frederick Richardson

Ruth Berman examines the life and work of Queen Zixi of Ix illustrator Frederick Richardson, with an extensive and comprehensive narrative of his life, achievements, and changes in artistic method, as well as a checklist of his illustrations in books, textbooks, and periodicals. Includes many examples of his illustrations.

“Hit with a Piece of Pie”: John R. Neill and a Comic Tradition

J. L. Bell suggests that John R. Neill may have been the first to illustrate the now-familiar comic situation of a pie in the face—and goes on to provide evidence for his theory.

Oz Oddity

The editors examine more unusual Oz-themed advertising, including a colorful label for Oz Peanut Spread (reproduced on the interior back cover) and an ad for Labatt’s Crystal Lager.
