Spring 2003 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
A Checklist of Published Oz Apocrypha 1990–2001
Stephen J. Teller collates an extensive addendum to his checklist, which includes extra-canonical books by Baum and others as well as many pastiches. The original checklist was published in the Autumn 1990 issue.
Music from The Maid of Arran (Part 2)
The sheet music for three songs from the 1882 show, entirely written and composed by “Louis F. Baum” (L. Frank Baum), are reproduced: “The Legend of Castle Arran,” “A Rollicking Irish Boy,” and “When O’Mara is King Once Again.” Unfortunately they cannot be removed cleanly from the issue. An initial set of songs was published in the Winter 2002 issue.
Immortality and Mortality in Oz
David Hulan examines the contradictions apparent in the Oz books where sometimes, characters are able to age and die in Oz—and sometimes, they can’t. Addressing the problem as if the Oz books represent a genuine history, he attempts to account for the inconsistencies and provide a workable explanation.
In Memoriam
Evelyn Copelman (first illustrator of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz after W. W. Denslow).
