Spring 2011 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Frank Kramer: The Lost Illustrator of Oz

Atticus Gannaway investigates the life of Frank Kramer, the illustrator of The Magical Mimics in Oz and The Shaggy Man of Oz, who had hitherto been rarely recognized within Oz scholarship. The extensive feature includes rare photographs and illustrations from outside the Oz books. It is followed by “A Frank Kramer Gallery,” in which Gannaway comments on selections of Kramer’s work, looking at their inspirations and sometimes comparing them to similar work by John R. Neill.

Oz Under Scrutiny: Brickbats and Bouquets: Criticism of Frank Kramer’s Work

In an unusual tangent for this series, which typically features on contemporary reviews of Oz books, here Atticus Gannaway compiles reviews of Kramer’s illustrative work—including, but not limited to, the Oz books—during the artist’s lifetime.

A Checklist of Works Illustrated by Frank Kramer

Atticus Gannaway pens this straightforward checklist of books and magazines illustrated by Kramer.

From the Oz Club Archives: Frank Kramer’s Original Illustrations for The Shaggy Man of Oz

Atticus Gannaway looks at the full set of pictures by Kramer for The Shaggy Man of Oz, which are held by the International Wizard of Oz Club. These include sketches, unused illustrations, and early versions of certain illustrations.

The MGM Scrapbook: The Story Behind The Wizard of Oz

The first two chapters of a six-part serialized newspaper article prepared by MGM’s publicity department in 1939, which “tells the story” behind their newest film. Later installments would be published in the Autumn 2011 and Winter 2011 issues.

In Memoriam

Florence Baum Hurst (L. Frank Baum’s last living grandchild); Clara Houck (regular Chittenango festival-goer); Elizabeth Maren (wife of MGM actor Jerry Maren).
