Spring 2013 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Oz The Great and Powerful Movie Coverage
The first section of this issue is dedicated to Disney’s new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, moving from critic Ryan Jay‘s story of attending the red-carpet premiere, a press screening, and the TV junket; to Freddy Fogarty‘s review of the film; to Scott Hedley‘s checklist of movie merchandise and collectibles.
Collecting Oz Books: Repair, Restore, or Conserve?
In this first of a new series on book collecting, Michael O. Riley explains the differences between—and consequences of—repairing, restoring, and conserving old books such as (but not limited to) the Oz series. He also discusses the realistic “rarity” of volumes from the series.
The Troublesome Tottenhots: The Long History Behind Baum’s “Little Brown Folks”
J. L. Bell examines the controversial chapter from The Patchwork Girl of Oz, offering up specific and more generalized cultural influences on Baum, as well as Baum’s possible intent in their characterization.
Imagining Oz Before Dorothy
Jared Davis compares three stories of the Wizard’s adventures before Dorothy came to Oz—Hugh Pendexter III’s Oz and the Three Witches (1977), Donald Abbott’s How the Wizard Came to Oz (1991), and the new Disney film, Oz The Great and Powerful (2013)—to see which fits most smoothly with Baum’s canon.
Lincoln the Boy
This is the reproduction of a story illustrated by John R. Neill for the syndicated Children’s Stories That Never Grow Old series in newspapers (1907–08), but not included in the published hardcover volumes by Reilly & Britton. It is presented with a short introduction by Greg Hunter. Another story that never made it out of the newspapers, “Joan of Arc,” would be republished in the Spring 2014 issue.
The Oz Illustrator
A recurring feature in which a celebrity or fan artist demonstrates how to draw one Oz character. Here, comic artist Isabelle Melançon draws Ozma.
In Memoriam
Evan McCord (Munchkin convention regular).
