Spring 2014 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

St. Nicholas Magazine and Queen Zixi of Ix: The Transformation of American Fantasy

Peter E. Hanff considers the prestige of Queen Zixi of Ix‘s serialization in St. Nicholas Magazine, setting it in the context of the rapidly changing publishing world of the period. Includes vintage advertising. This is followed by a bibliographic description of the individual and collected issues of St. Nicholas that contain serialized installments of Queen Zixi.

The Sincerest Form of Flattery: The Amazing Land of Wew and the Land of Oz

Marc Berezin examines John G. Kaufer’s The Amazing Land of Wew, a 1954 children’s novel that seems to imitate the structure, and even some specific episodes, of L. Frank Baum’s Oz books. Most of the article is given to a detailed synopsis of the title. Includes illustrations and vintage advertising.

From Oz to the Moon: The Magical Land of Noom

Holly Dennis-Lucas looks at Raggedy Ann creator Johnny Gruelle’s associations with the world of Oz, ranging from the attempt to have him re-illustrate The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to his friendship with famed Scarecrow actor Fred Stone. However, the article focuses mostly on The Magical Land of Noom, the 1922 fantasy Gruelle wrote and published, possibly as a response to the failed plan to illustrate Wizard. Includes illustrations and photographs.

The Story of the Pamami Press (Part 1)

Michael O. Riley pens a memoir of his personal publishing endeavors to make little-known Baum works available in high-quality, bespoke editions. This first half includes the origins of the project, his fascination with printing, Nelebel’s Fairyland, Strange Tale of Nursery Folk, and The Runaway Shadows. The second half would be published in the Autumn 2014 issue, and a checklist of Pamami publications would follow in the Winter 2014 issue.

Broken Book Options: Repair, Conserve, or Restore?

Sophie Siobahn Wolohan Bogle discusses several different “problem” situations with antiquarian books, and the options for professional repairs, conservation, or restoration in each instance. She also discusses different professionals to whom you might take your book for assistance.

The Oz Illustrator

A recurring feature in which a celebrity or fan artist demonstrates how to draw one Oz character. Here, illustrator Kim McFarland draws characters from Sky Pyrates Over Oz.

Dorothy Returns to the Big Screen: An Animated Oz Story

Nate Barlow previews the new animated film Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, examining its place as part of a broader “transmedia franchise” and the various trials and delays that held it back from its original release date in 2012.

Joan of Arc

This is the reproduction of a story illustrated by John R. Neill for the syndicated Children’s Stories That Never Grow Old series in newspapers (1907–08), but not included in the published hardcover volumes by Reilly & Britton. It is presented with a short introduction by Craig J. Noble. Another story that never made it out of the newspapers, “Lincoln the Boy,” was republished in the Spring 2013 issue.
