Summer 1981 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Perfect Scarecrow (Part 1)
Daniel P. Mannix pens an extensive biographical feature on Fred Stone, the vaudeville entertainer who popularized the Scarecrow in the 1902 musical of The Wizard of Oz. Includes rare photographs. This installment ends before the turn of the century; the second part would be presented in the Autumn 1981 issue.
Invisible Inzi of Oz (Part 2)
The final five “chapters” of a unique original Oz story written by two children, Virginia and Robert Wauchope, which they supposedly received from L. Frank Baum by Ouija board. The story was originally published in A Child’s Garden for Cheerful and Happy Homes from October 1926 to September 1927. Chapters one to seven were reprinted in The Baum Bugle‘s Winter 1980 issue.
Unknown Poem of L. Frank Baum
An original poem by L. Frank Baum, composed on the occasion of a friend’s grandson in 1910.
The Copp, Clark Story: or Oz in Canada
Under the “Bibliographia Oziana” banner, C. J. Hinke recounts the history of Copp Clark-printed Oz and Baum books in Canada, with bibliographic details of known printings at time of writing. Includes a thorough guide to Copp, Clark spine and title page imprints for easy identification.
In Memoriam
Edgar Y. “Yip” Harburg (lyricist; MGM’s The Wizard of Oz).
