Winter 1977 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

The Tribulations of Trot

Barbara S. Koelle argues that Trot is Baum’s “most courageous little girl heroine,” with evidence from her several appearances.

Juggerjook (Part 1)

An original short story by L. Frank Baum, reprinted from the December 1910 issue of St. Nicholas. Accompanied by illustrations from St. Nicholas. Part 2 is presented in the Spring 1978 issue.

Bibliographia Pseudonymiana

James E. Haff collates bibliographical data about the books Baum wrote under psuedonyms. This installment focuses on Aunt Jane’s Nieces at Work.

The Ozmapolitan

This is a special facsimile of the original Ozmapolitan “newspaper” from 1927, which Reilly & Lee used to promote The Gnome King of Oz. Earlier facsimiles (1926 and 1904) were republished in the Spring 1963 and Autumn 1966 issues. Later facsimiles (1963, 1928, and 1970) would follow in the Autumn 1983, Spring 1988, and Autumn 1995 issues.

L. Frank Baum: Success and Frustration

Peter E. Hanff examines a selection of correspondence between Baum and novelist Emerson Hough, which provides a first-hand look at Baum’s attempts to find his way forward, both creatively and financially, following the success of The Wizard of Oz on stage—and a rapid series of consequent failures.

In Memoriam

Dorothy Thompson Curtiss (sister of Ruth Plumly Thompson).
