Winter 1978 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Man Nobody Knows
James E. Haff attempts to investigate the elusive and inconsistent character of the Soldier with the Green Whiskers, looking at evidence from across the canon of “famous forty” Oz books.
The Ozmite Club
Mary Scott, a former member of Reilly & Lee’s promotional Ozmite Club, details the workings of that “secret” society. Accompanied by typescripts of materials provided to booksellers and potential participants in the Ozmite Club.
Jno. R. Neill—An Illustrator’s Methods
Dick Martin discusses the preliminary sketches by John R. Neill that have survived on the reverse of his extant full-page drawings. Accompanied by a large reproduction of two such sketches on the back of an illustration from The Road to Oz.
Paul Tietjens’ “Ode to Denslow”
C. Warren Hollister describes the friendship between W. W. Denslow and composer Paul Tietjens that was formed around the 1902 Wizard of Oz musical. Includes a long tribute Tietjens wrote in verse form in Denslow’s guest book in 1901.
La Reine est Mort—Vive la Reine!
An original poem by L. Frank Baum, reprinted from the Chicago Times-Herald in 1895.
