Winter 1986 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Christmas Stocking
A reproduction of L. Frank Baum‘s Christmas greeting from Reilly & Britton’s 1905 storybooks. Accompanied by an illustration by Mary Cowles Clark.
John Fricke begins a comprehensive two-part look at NBC’s Wizard of Oz radio series, which was broadcast over six months in 1933. This first installment describes the events that led to the production of the series, as well as a careful description of the first thirteen weeks of broadcast. Memories of the show by Oz Club members Frederick E. Otto and Martha Liehe are also included, along with vintage advertising. The second half of the article would be published in the Spring 1987 issue, with a brief set of publicity photographs in the Spring 1991 issue.
Their Own Country—Why Boys and Girls Like Oz!
A promotional feature about the Oz series written by Ruth Plumly Thompson.
“Borderland of Oz” Cartography
Patrick Maund examines the details given that allow readers to map the locations of The Sea Fairies and Sky Island. Accompanied by illustrations of these maps.
Bibliographia Pseudonymiana: Aunt Jane’s Nieces on Vacation
Patrick Maund resumes the dormant series, collating bibliographical data about the early printings of Baum’s works published under a pseudonym. This installment focuses on “Edith Van Dyne’s” Aunt Jane’s Nieces on Vacation.
In Memoriam
Harold Arlen (composer, MGM’s The Wizard of Oz).
