Winter 1993 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

Silent Oz

Michael Patrick Hearn provides an expert overview of what little is known about the four one-reel silent Oz films produced by Selig Polyscope Co. in 1910, including a full summary of the extant one, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A sidebar by film curator Jan-Christopher Horak describes the rediscovery of that first short film.

Jack Burgitt’s Honor (Part 2)

The second half of an original short story by L. Frank Baum, written around 1895 but not published until 1905 as a syndicated newspaper story. The first half was published in the Autumn 1993 issue.

Oz Films Revisited

Marc Lewis revises and updates the checklist of Oz films he first produced for the Winter 1983 issue. An entirely new and detailed checklist would follow in the Spring 2004 issue.

Bibliographia Baumiana: John Dough and the Cherub (1906)

Bibliographia Baumiana provides bibliographical details of non-Oz works by Baum, occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. This installment, by Patrick Maund, examines American Fairy Tales. An earlier assessment of this title appeared in the Spring 1969 issue.

The MGM Scrapbook: “We’re Off to See the Munchkins”: The Making of the Video Documentary

John Fricke goes behind the scenes of the new VHS documentary that interviews many of the remaining actors to have played Munchkins in MGM’s The Wizard of Oz.
