Winter 1996 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

OZ Iced Over

Inspired by the then-current Wizard of Oz on Ice, William Stillman presents a photo essay of past “Oz on ice” shows, including the 1951 Ice Capades, the 1955 Hollywood Ice Revue, and more.

Dorothy’s Adventures Underground

Richard Tuerk examines the “unpleasant adventures” of Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, Baum’s fourth Oz book, comparing the effect of its dark and depressing episodes to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Accompanied by illustrations by Hatsuo Nakai, including a color centerfold. A sidebar by William Stillman, “Dorothy, the Wizard and Hatsuo in Oz,” introduces the artist to readers. (Another color centerfold by Nakai would later be included in the Winter 1997 issue.)

The Lost Illustrator of Oz (and Mo)

William Stillman re-examines the work of artist Evelyn Copelman, the first to re-illustrate The Wonderful Wizard of Oz after W. W. Denslow. He also looks at her edition of Baum’s non-Oz fantasy, The Magical Monarch of Mo. Includes quotes from the artist.

Bibliographia Baumiana: L. Frank Baum’s Juvenile Speaker and Baum’s Own Book for Children

Bibliographia Baumiana provides bibliographical details of non-Oz works by Baum, occasionally updating past articles alongside new ones. Patrick M. Maund pens a new bibliographic examination of these two L. Frank Baum titles, superseding that found in the Christmas 1972 issue.

Oz Oddity

Taking a hint from Dick Martin in The Oz Scrapbook, the editors look back at the rare Cowardly Lion dolls manufactured alongside the release of MGM’s The Wizard of Oz. The dolls appear on the interior back cover, alongside a more common “Judy Garland as Dorothy” doll for scale.

In Memoriam

James E. Nitch (author, The Mysterious Chronicles of Oz; Ozmapolitan and Winkie convention regular).
