Winter 1997 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Mother Goose in Prose
Martin Gardner analyzes Baum’s first children book, looking at its genesis, its foreshadowing of Oz, the charm of its prose, and its publication, as well as Baum’s inscription in the copy given to his sister, Mary Louise. Includes several examples of vintage advertising. This essay was probably intended for a reprint of the book by Dover Publications, which never occurred.
Kenneth Feld’s The Wizard of Oz on Ice: A Souvenir Checklist
Jay Scarfone provides a comprehensive checklist of merchandise related to the tour, including clothing, jewelry, coloring books, mugs, toys, dolls, and more. Includes many illustrative examples.
Ozcot: My Second Home
Ozma Baum Mantele, L. Frank Baum’s granddaughter, looks back on happy visits to her grandmother in the 1920s and ’30s. Many rare photos of the home, inside and out, are included.
Oz Oddity
The editors look back at the Swift Company’s Oz Peanut Butter and its colorful character mobile, reproduced on both sides of the back cover. A German-language jar label is also shown. A more extensive article about Swift’s Oz glasses and labels was published in the Winter 1991 issue.
In Memoriam
