Winter 1998 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
Wizard of Oz Coloring Book Checklist
William Beem pens a highly comprehensive and detailed checklist of 73 coloring books relating to The Wizard of Oz (and occasionally, its sequels), published from 1939 to 1997.
The (Samuel) French Connection: The Junior League Plays Plus
Stephen J. Teller provides a thorough examination of the Junior League plays adapting five Baum books in the 1920s and ’30s: The Wizard of Oz, The Land of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Ozma of Oz, and The Enchanted Island of Yew. Each play is described fully. Includes vintage advertising and photographs.
How the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman Met Some Old Friends
A reproduction of one installment of L. Frank Baum and Walt McDougall’s Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz newspaper comic page in 1904. Unlike the many previous installments reproduced in The Baum Bugle since the mid-1960s, however, this one has been fully transcribed as an article, followed by the original comic page as a color centerfold.
The Great City of Oz: L. Frank Baum at the 1893 World’s Fair
Michael Riley attempts to answer the question of whether or not L. Frank Baum was inspired by his visits to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition to create the Emerald City of Oz, carefully analyzing the exposition itself, its construction and contents, and the extent of Baum’s exposure to its delights. Includes many vintage photographs.
Oz Oddity
The editors look at a series of eight Italian Oz character storybooks released in 1948, collectively titled Dorothy e i Soui Amici nel Regno di Oz and retelling the story of The Wizard of Oz (which was released, in translation, in a single large volume with matching illustrations). The color covers of all eight storybooks are shown on both sides of this issue’s back cover.
In Memoriam
Dorothy Tuttle Nitch (wife of James E. Nitch; former MGM dancer); Rachel Cosgrove Payes (fifth Royal Historian of Oz).
