Winter 2002 Selected Contents
This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus: An Appreciation
Stephen J. Teller considers the popularity, longevity, and reach of Baum’s Christmas story, its mythological overtones, and his own change in attitude toward it over time. Includes vintage advertising from the Baum scrapbooks.
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
James Doyle Remembered
Kathy Biehl documents composer James Doyle’s obsession with the 1902 Wizard of Oz musical extravaganza, which led to him reconstructing, and ultimately re-orchestrating, the score alongside David Maxine. She also briefly describes his work on the Toronto Civic Light Opera Company’s original version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This article is followed immediately by tributes from David Maxine and Karl-Michael Emyrs to composer James Doyle, who died in early 2002. (His obituary was published in the Autumn 2002 issue.)
Music from The Maid of Arran (Part 1)
The sheet music for three songs from the 1882 show, entirely written and composed by “Louis F. Baum” (L. Frank Baum), are reproduced: “Waiting for the Tide to Turn,” “Oona’s Gift,” and “When O’Mara is King Once Again.” Unfortunately, they cannot be removed cleanly from the issue. A second set of songs would be published in the Spring 2003 issue.
L. Frank Baum in Macatawa
Barbara D’Amato and Brian D’Amato recall family stories told about L. Frank Baum and his family at their cottage, “The Sign of the Goose,” as well as their own memories of Macatawa, Michigan.
