Little Freddy Oz Fan
Fred M. Meyer: Tributes
Tributes to the driving force of the Oz Club for five decades, Fred M. Meyer, led by a memorial essay from Michael Patrick Hearn. Other contributors include Nancy Petrasko, Peter E. Hanff, Jay Delkin, Barbara S. Koelle, Gina Wickwar, Stephen J. Teller, and Jane Albright.
Fred M. Meyer and the Oz Christmas Card Tradition
Peter E. Hanff describes Fred M. Meyer’s tradition of a Christmas card for all Oz Club members, spanning 1957–2003. A gallery of every card up to that point is provided, along with details of their themes and artists. (The card tradition continued beyond Meyer’s death through the present day, although infrequently with an original design.)
Return to the Marvelous Land of Oz One Hundred Years Later
Michael Patrick Hearn describes how Baum partnered with Reilly & Britton to publish a new fantasy, intended to launch off the popularity of the Wizard of Oz musical extravaganza. Hearn analyzes how elements of the book respond to popular aspects of the stage musical, as well as trends in theatrical entertainment generally, and how much this second Oz book is unlike The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He also considers the hiring of John R. Neill, the concern over the title, the ultimate publication and promotion of the book, and the inception of both the Woggle-Bug musical and the “Queer Visitors from the Marvelous Land of Oz” comic page. Includes vintage advertising from the Baum scrapbooks.
Imperial Oz: The Ozian Empire
Kenneth R. Shepherd examines Ozma’s role as an “empire builder,” building upon existing imperialist undertones present when she assumed the throne and flourishing following the defeat of the Nome invasion. This is a follow-up article to one twelve years earlier, in Winter 1992, that looked at the relationship between Ozma and the Nome Kingdom.
In Memoriam
Fred M. Meyer (secretary, the Oz Club, 1957–96).
