Winter 2012 Selected Contents

This is a guide to the articles and reviews from the issue that will most benefit researchers, scholars, and collectors. The printed issue includes additional content such as news, editorial letters, and other commentary-based departments.

The Wizard of Oz and How it Grew

Stephen Teller examines the evolution of the Wizard of Oz musical extravaganza, providing a detailed comparison of the different script versions, ranging from Baum’s original attempt (mostly authentic to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), and ending with the revised version used in New York and beyond. This is the most comprehensive guide to the content of the show yet published in the Bugle. Includes a transcript of a 1902 article from The Philharmonic taking readers behind the scenes of the Chicago version of the show.

Oz Under Scrutiny: The Wizard of Oz Extravaganza

Craig J. Noble looks at reviews of The Wizard of Oz contemporary to its Chicago premiere.

Lotta’s Luster Lost?

Sean P. Duffley closely examines the breakout success of the song “Sammy” from the Wizard of Oz musical extravaganza, the performer with which it was most associated, Lotta Faust, and the imitation of her performance of the song that led to a lawsuit.

CuriOzity

The editors look at a songbook, created to promote “Hamlin’s Wizard Oil,” that includes lyrics from two Wizard of Oz songs and depictions of Anna Laughlin, David Montgomery, and Mabel Barrison (all current or former stars of the extravaganza).
