Inspired by a newspaper clipping in Harry Houdini’s scrapbooks, Ian Davis Smith recounts the one-time meeting of L. Frank Baum and the famed Chinese magician known as “Ching Ling Foo” (朱連魁). He also details the magician’s biography that led him to this point.

 

The Believing Child

A special reprint of the 1970 short story by Zenna Henderson, in which a young teacher recounts her creeping horror when one of her students learns to speak Baum’s unspeakable word—and uses it to take revenge. Presented by permission of the estate of Zenna Henderson, with new illustrations by Mark Manley.
