Vol. 69, No. 3 (Winter 2025) gives the spotlight to Her Royal Highness Princess Ozma of Oz!

Since she first appeared in The Marvelous Land of Oz in 1904, Ozma has been an inspiration. Wise, beautiful, benevolent, and kind, she radiates authority and functions as the ideal best friend to Dorothy. Her legacy extends throughout our culture, as this issue demonstrates.

Nate Barlow opens our issue with an extensive discussion of his restoration of the Oz Film Manufacturing Company’s His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz (1914), frames of which appear on our front cover. His project to save the silent films of L. Frank Baum continues, and you can learn how to contribute. You’ll also learn why Vivian Reed’s Ozma, seen at the start and end of the movies, is supposed to have shoulders!

JaVonn Hill joins us to tell us about his remarkable, Ozma-inspired discovery in the world of insects, while Cynthia Twohy Ragni takes us back in time to the first Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program, “Project Ozma.” In a contest-winning essay, Leighton Suen documents how Ozma has become an iconic figure for a marginalized community, and Gregory Hall discusses how her memorable transformation from Tip forms the basis of his remarkable new opera, Marvelous.

Nick Campbell interviews Steven Lenton, illustrator of three new UK Oz reprints, and there’s even a special color section of 2025’s Ozian holiday experiences at British country estates. (Each one is unique and remarkable!)

As if that’s not enough, you’ll also receive a special Ozma paper doll craft by Kroffty!
